Congratulations!  If you are reading this then you have likely accepted a new position that requires relocation.  Or maybe you have relocated in the past and wish it went smoother?  Either way moving is never easy.  It is a large and sometimes scary task – but it can go smoother if you follow some general guidelines and stay determined.  I hope some of the tips and resources below will assist in your transition.

SOME TIPS:

  • Never tell the moving companies your move is for work or that it is being paid for by your new company. That usually inflates the price and limits your relocation resources.
  • Always make sure to get “binding” moving quotes so the price cannot fluctuate. Most clients will require 2-3 binding bids.
    • Phone bids are not reliable – it is our experience that phone bids will change drastically when they show up for the move. You should request an in-person quote or at the very least a video chat quote where they inventory your move.
    • If your moving company does not accept major credit cards, you should be wary. Paying otherwise significantly reduces your “recourse” should things not work out.
  • Know that companies do not usually pay for “full-packs” (personal wardrobe, forks, knives etc).
  • Try to use a major chain of moving companies.  While they may cost a bit more their national systems usually have better customer service and track records.

TEMPORARY HOUSING:

  • If you enter “temporary housing or corporate housing”, city, state into your search browser a local list will come up for your selection.  Most clients will require 2-3 pricing options unless they are providing this directly.
  • If you are setting up temporary housing and have pets make sure to ask if they are “pet friendly” and inquire about extra costs or non-refundable pet related deposits.

Moving is always stressful but doesn’t have to prevent you from obtaining your next great job.  Hopefully these basic tips will make your next transition smoother.
