Many candidates “think” they are open to relocating for work…but generally they have not asked themselves the right questions.  Below is a little test to see if you should consider relocating or not.

WHICH BUCKET DO YOU FALL IN TO?

Bucket #1 – I am open to relocation

  • My family and I have discussed/planned this for some time now.
  • We have some clear areas of interest (specific cities/states).
  • No major family ties in our current location keeping us here.
  • We don’t have children but if we do they are at an age/time of year when moving makes sense.
  • I don’t have a house OR housing market is good so we can easily sell OR we already have the house on the market.
  • My significant other does not have a career that holds us here geographically.

Bucket # 2 – I am open to relocation for the “right” opportunity

  • I really haven’t considered relocation.
  • My family and I have no specific destinations in mind,
  • Most of our family and support network is here locally.
  • If someone made me an offer “I couldn’t refuse” of course I’d consider it.

I think I speak for all recruiters and hiring managers everywhere when I say if you are in bucket # 2 – just say I am not open to relocation :-)
